Harris Avery Hill Receives Planning

Noviun are delighted to announce that our Harris Academy Avery Hill project in Greenwich has received planning permission.

This challenging and exciting project consists in the conversion of part of the University of Greenwich Avery Hill Campus into a secondary school for boys and mixed gender Sixth Form.

The new school will cater for 1150 students and will be part of Harris Federation, a group of 48 successful primary and secondary academies in and around London educating some 36,000 young people.

Most Harris academies have been rated by Ofsted either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ with the vast majority being Outstanding.

The site includes a series of existing buildings which hold varying levels of heritage value and quality, including Grade II Listing in parts. The transformation of the current University’s library into the school’s “Grand Hall” is the centerpiece of the refurbished buildings, which also includes the reconfiguration of the “Honeycomb” building into the school’s Arts hub.

The scheme is complemented by 2 new buildings: a 2-3 storey main building extension and a Sports block. The main building will accommodate General Teaching, Sixth Form Centre and Science Labs; all classrooms have been arranged around the building’s “heart” which contains the LRC and Science Prep at the upper levels and the Dining Hall, overlooking Avery Hill park, at ground floor.

The Sports block includes a 4-court sports hall and an Activity studio, both spaces will be available for community use, also the Grand Hall and several learning spaces of the school premises will be open to the local community for out of school hours use.

The sustainable agenda for this project includes BREEAM “excellent” rating and compliance with London Plan 2020.

This project is a great opportunity to create an inspirational educational environment by marrying remarkable existing spaces with contemporary architecture, this approach reflects well the school ethos, embracing modern education and traditional values.

We look forward to seeing this exciting project progress.
